Key works
The work of Duke Togo, a sniper of the first rank. It holds the world record for the most volumes of a single manga, and is the high point of gekiga.
Chie, a grade-schooler running an offal restaurant in working-class Osaka. A Kansai-dialect comedy of human warmth that stood out sharply in a seinen magazine.
The maddeningly slow romance between Kyoko, who manages an old apartment building, and Godai, a student retaking his exams. The cornerstone of seinen romantic comedy.
A street-racing manga about attacking mountain passes. It produced a drifting boom and became the emblem of street-racing culture.
A fantasy about the relationship between mushi and people. A cycle of short stories highly praised for its still, poetic world.
America, 1890, and a race across the continent. A competition for the parts of a corpse, and a reset of the whole world of the series. Many call it the best, with Araki's drawing and structure at full maturity.
Rei Kiriyama, a lonely young shogi professional, recovering through the game and through other people. Delicate psychological drawing lifts shogi into human drama.
Morioh after the earthquake. A mystery about the identity of Josuke, a man with no memory — another Morioh, and a curse that has to be undone.
A boy who means to become the best jazz player in the world. Highly praised for performance scenes that let you hear sound through drawing.
Asakusa the setting obsessive, Mizusaki the charismatic reader-model, and Kanamori who handles the money, take on making anime to build the strongest world. The imagined images erupt straight onto the page, and the pleasure of making things comes through whole.
Yatora, who does everything competently, is struck by a single painting and enters the world of art-school entrance exams. It faces the pain and the joy of betting your life on what you love, and turned art into a youth sport.
Hawaii, present day. The bizarre adventure of Jodio, a boy who wants to be rich. The current part, still running.

About this entry
Genre boundaries are drawn where the network of manga happens to concentrate, not by decree. Years are approximate. Where opinions differ, this page says so rather than picking a winner.
